Olaf is one of ten sight impaired horses we have on the Farm. He was rescued from a cruelty/starvation situation in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania where he was seized along with twelve other horses back in September 2016. Right after the seizure, the horses were drinking gallons of water and had to be weaned back on to hay because if they ate too much too soon it would very harmful to them. Unfortunately, four of the 13 horses seized did not make it. Olaf's former owner was convicted of 13 counts of cruelty to animals, including four that led to the deaths of the four horses at his property. He was sentenced to jail in November, 2016 receiving the maximum sentence allowed for this crime.
Willow Run Sanctuary & Adoptions, a dog and cat rescue and sanctuary in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, did an amazing job at bringing Olaf and the eight remaining seized horses back to health and good weight. Olaf is blind, and while his vet thinks he may still see some shadows, his condition will never improve. The volunteers at WRSA searched for a sanctuary that could accommodate animals with visual impairments and fortunately found Journey's End. Olaf was immediatley placed on our wait list and we were so happy to welcome him to his new home in March 2017.
Olaf worked his entire life, probably used as a plow horse. He no long has to work. Now he just gets to enjoy being out in the sunshine with his friends, doing what he wants to do.
Brady, also blind, was the first to welcome him.
After a roll in the mud, Olaf enjoys some hay.
Olaf is a big boy measuring 18 hh
Days of starvation and cruelty are all but forgotten.
